Solid-colour stains, which the USDA Forest Products Laboratory advises against for walking surfaces because they tend to peel, perform well on vertical wood and railings. That lets a fence or pergola take a more opaque colour that matches the house trim, while the deck boards keep a penetrating stain that wears evenly underfoot.
