Prep Decides How Long It Lasts

A stain is only as good as the surface it goes onto. It has to soak into clean wood, so the dirt, mildew and grey weathered fibres have to come off first, and the wood has to be dry - the USDA Forest Products Laboratory recommends at least two warm, dry days after cleaning before a finish goes on. That is why every staining job starts with a proper clean and brighten, and why we will move a start date rather than stain damp boards ahead of rain.

Choosing the Stain

The more pigment a finish carries, the better it resists sun. On a deck in full afternoon sun, a semi-transparent stain is usually the right balance: enough pigment to protect, still penetrating so it wears rather than peels. Solid stains look uniform but, on walking surfaces, tend to peel; they earn their place on railings and fascia. If you want the grain and natural colour to show, a clear or toner sealer is the lighter option, with a shorter recoat interval.

Semi-transparent stain goes on by brush, working it into the boards, and only as much as the wood will absorb. Rollers and sprayers are quick but tend to leave too much on horizontal surfaces, which is how a penetrating finish ends up as a film that flakes.

Where We Stain

Sunny, exposed decks in Donelson and Hermitage and Brentwood, shaded ones under big trees in Green Hills and Bellevue, and older decks on older houses in East Nashville and Sylvan Park. If the old coat is peeling, the job starts with stripping instead.

How long does it take? Usually one to two days of work, plus drying time before and after. Weather sets the calendar more than the size of the deck.
